South Africa produced 6 nuclear weapons. South Africa dismantled its nuclear weapons program in 1989. South Africa held its first universal elections in 1994, which ended the official apartheid era. South Africa has the unique status of a nation that developed nuclear weapons and disassembled its arsenal before joining the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. It was the only country in Africa to have nuclear weapons.
