Jamaica to come out of UK Queen shadow
PressTV
The newly-sworn-in Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller wants to make her country a republic in a bid to rid the Caribbean island of the British Queen as the head of state.
Simpson Miller said in her inaugural address that Jamaica should shake off the British monarchy and replace Queen Elizabeth with a president as head of state.
Jamaica is looking to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its independence from Britain shortly.
The announcement comes after talks of looming disintegration within both the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth of Nations.
Simpson Miller’s comment follows similar calls by both Republicans and politicians in Australia whose PM said back in 2008 that they also seek to remove the British Queen as their head of state.
The United Kingdom also faces a huge challenge to its union after Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond vowed to put Scottish independence to public vote in an attempt to gain independence.
