THE 2012 Havana International Fair (FIHAV-2012) highlights the impressive development of the event, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary, thanks to the encouragement and guidance of Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro.

For three decades the Fair has made a significant contribution to the promotion of Cuba’s international commercial relations and the diversification of foreign trade.

The first event took place in 1983 with the participation of some 60 companies. “Today, we can assert, with great satisfaction, that the Fair has grown in prestige, participation and results, having truly become a multi-sector commercial exchange, considered among the most important in Latin America,” said Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment Rodrigo Malmierca.

Representatives of more than 100 Cuban enterprises, along with 3,000-plus from around the world, are attending the event, making this fair the best attended in 10 years.

As Malmierca said, this participation reflects confidence in the Cuban market and represents opposition, on the part of international business to the criminal U.S. economic, financial and commercial blockade.

Malmierca recalled that November 13, the UN General Assembly will again overwhelmingly condemn this unjust economic war on Cuba and approve, one more time, a resolution calling for an end to the blockade, evidencing the isolation of the U.S. government in terms of its policy toward Cuba.

At the same time, the Minister confirmed that despite the effects of the blockade, problems generated by the world economic crisis and climate change, the Cuban economy has maintained a modest but sustained recovery and growth rate.

“The gross domestic product increased by 2.7 % in 2011, and this tendency continued into the first part of 2012, during which a 2.1% growth rate was posted, two tenths of a percentage point greater than during the same period the previous year,” he explained.

The Minister also reported that last year, trade in merchandise increased 1.3%, the export of goods showed a similar trend, while the provision of services abroad by Cuban enterprises continues to grow.

He commented that foreign capital investment will continue to play an important role in the updating of Cuba’s economy currently underway, facilitating the acquisition of modern, environmentally friendly technology and the diversification of export markets for Cuban goods and services.

After visiting several displays of Cuban and foreign exhibitors, Council of Ministers Vice President Ricardo Cabrisas said that the Fair is the starting point from which the country will achieve greater success, based on the effort being made to restructure the entire economy according to the priorities agreed upon at the 6th Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba and concretized in the 2012-2016 economic plan.

During FIHAV 2012, Cuba and Russia are further consolidating their commercial ties with the 10th meeting of the Russian-Cuban Intergovernmental Commission and the 5th session of the Enterprise Council

During the opening of the Russian Pavilion, attended by Denis Manturov, head of the country’s Industry and Commerce Ministry, Malmierca affirmed that enterprise leaders in the two countries will continue to pursue policies to strengthen their commercial relations in bio-technology, tourism, health care, computer science, transportation and other sectors.

The celebration of Brazil Day at the Fair was capped by the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Cuban steel industry and the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, which outlined a cooperative effort in the treatment of solid waste.
